“The flight of an eagle” – this route is a real delicacy for those, who love wilderness, places of interest that only few know about (and you cannot even find them on internet!) in sparsely populated rural areas. If you are an explorer, who likes to be completely away from the hustle and bustle, if you like wild forest roads and beautiful scenery, then this route is exactly what you need! By the way, the name of the small town of Ergli translates as Eagles.
In this diverse and adventurous route, we guarantee that you will wish that the walls or the buildings you see could talk! It can happen already at the beginning of the route, when you reach the town of Vestiena and get to Veseta dairy, where the rivers of milk were flowing once. It could also happen near Veseta hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in vicinity of Lake Kala, in the ruins of the windmill or in the ruins of our favourite place – Tolka St. Cross Orthodox Church.
You will indeed experience both. It is not possible to cross the old Egli railway bridges over River Naruza and River Piparupite without a rush of adrenaline. You will experience that trying to get to some of our places of interest too. In some parts of the route you will not find any trace of civilization, only wilderness, which is exceptionally beautiful in this protected area of Vidzeme highlands, near Vestiena. You will see the picturesque Lake Kala with its five islands, Lake Kariete, you will drive past several large oaks, and the winding forest River Vedze nature trail is definitely worth a walk. It is hard to imagine a better picnic spot than the bank of this river! At the end of the route you will get to enjoy beautiful views of the Kakarags hills and the landscape that reveals itself from Briezkalns in Ergli.
You will be able to see how they lived when visiting Jumurda Manor house, which is one of the examples of historicist architecture style in Latvia, and its surrounding buildings that now have become a modern recreation complex. Cirsti manor house will delight the fans of neo-Gothic architecture style.
