Road P31 Ergli – Drabesi consist only of sharper or flatter bends, but in straight the stages can be counted on the fingers of one hand! Have you experienced anything like this in your life?!
But Route #13 will not be just a ride on winding roads, it is also included interesting sights that will make the trip from Cesis to Ergli (or vice versa) very attractive and exciting! Virtually all roads are gravel, but nowadays they are quite good quality, if unless you choose to travel during periods of prolonged drought or rain.
There is this website dangerousroads.org, which lists the world’s most dangerous roads. Interestingly, you can also find one of Latvia’s highways – P79 Ergli – Koknese on this site. However, dangerousroads.org does not know that there is another regional road in Latvia, which Self Drive Latvia would definitely label as even more dangerous and winding! It is the road P31 Ergli – Drabesi. The whole road consists only of sharp bends and hard turns, but the straight sections can be counted on the fingers of one hand! Route #13 (what a coincidence!) is, of course, not just a trip along the highways mentioned above, it includes several other roads and also exciting sights and places of interest that will make the trip from Cesis to Ergli (or vice versa) very attractive and exciting!
To be honest, no one has counted the bends, but there are a lot of them! In the vicinity of Ergli, we have created another scenic loop, which can be shortened, if your head is already spinning from the first half of the route. But one thing is clear – these roads are not suitable for people with a sensitive vestibular system, because “left – right – left” and “up-down” is how you will spend the entire journey. But the prize is the super-beautiful landscapes of Vidzeme highlands and our specially hand-picked places of interest!
Although there are signs like “bumpy road for 13 km” in some sections of the route, you should not be afraid of it, unless you choose to travel during a long period of drought or rain. The road is quite even, but of course, as it can be on gravel roads, there may be potholes on it, there may be loose gravel deposits, there may be unexpected oncoming drivers, so – be careful! And what would a “SelfDriveLatvia” route be without adventures?!
You will like it! Because this region of Latvia simply cannot be disliked!
Have a good trip!
